Biography
Andrew Alfred Dexter was the son of Andrew Dexter [1779-1837] and Charlotte Morton Dexter [1787-1819], married in 1808. Charlotte Morton Dexter, subject of a portrait by Gilbert Stuart now in the NGA [1947.17.104], was the daughter of Perez and Sarah Wentworth Apthorp Morton of Boston. Mrs. Morton was the author of a novel, The Power of Sympathy, written under the name Philona. Andrew Dexter was a Brown University graduate, lawyer, and nephew of Samuel Dexter, Secretary of War and Secretary of the Treasury (1800). Andrew Dexter was president of the Boston Bank. When the bank failed the family moved to Athens, New York. Later, in 1816, Andrew Dexter moved to Montgomery Alabama, where his wife joined him in 1819, but died twelve days after her arrival. Charlotte Morton and Andrew Dexter also had a daughter, Charlotte Dexter [1812-1878]. Andrew Alfred Dexter married Sarah Williams [1815-1890], with whom he had a daughter, Charlotte Morton Dexter [later Mrs. Joseph Campbell, 1848-1924].
