Samuel W. MacDonald was the son of William McDonald, a wealthy citizen of Baltimore, and the grandson of William C. MacDonald of Baltimore, a merchant and member of the Maryland militia during the Revolutionary War. At the age of 21, in 1870, Samuel McDonald came into possession of an estate of a half a million dollars, from his father. He purchased a hunting lodge in Terre Haute, IN, to which he made frequent excursions. Samuel McDonald died 7 years later in Indiana.
