Pelham-Clinton, Elizabeth; Zerega di Zerega, Elizabeth
Biography
Elizabeth was the only daughter of Louis H. Zerega di Zerega of New York. She married in 1866 Charles Stapleton Pelham-Clinton (1857-1911), the son of Elizabeth Grant (d. 1899) and Charles Pelham-Clinton (1813-1894). Elizabeth Grant's father, William Grant (d. 1821) was a lawyer and landowner in Scotland, perhaps best remembered as the subject of Gilbert Stuart's full length portrait The Skater, now in the NGA (1950.18.1). The Charles Stapleton Pelham-Clintons had no children, but in 1916 Elizabeth Pelham-Clinton adopted her niece, Georgiana Elizabeth May (b. 1913), the daughter of Charles' brother Hubert Edward.
