Pelham-Clinton, Charles Stapleton

Scottish, 1857 - 1911

Biography

Charles was the son of Elizabeth Grant (d. 1899) and Charles Pelham-Clinton (1813-1894), the second son of the 4th Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyme. Elizabeth's father, William Grant (d. 1821) was a lawyer and landowner in Scotland, perhaps best remembered as the subject of Gilbert Stuart's full length portrait The Skater, now in the NGA (1950.18.1). Charles was married on 10 August 1848 to Elizabeth Zerega di Zerega (d. 1946). They had no children, but in 1916 Elizabeth adopted their niece, Georgiana Elizabeth May Pelham-Clinton (b. 1913), daughter of Charles' brother Hubert.
