William was the son of Stephen Van Rensselaer (1764-1839) and his second wife Cornelia. The Van Renssalaers were one of the wealthiest families in New York; Stephen had served in the state senate and as a lieutenant-governor of New York during John Jay's term as governor. William married firstly on 13 May 1833 to Eliza Bayard Rogers (1811-1835), with whom he had a son, and secondly to her sister Sarah Rogers (1809-1877), with whom he had 8 children. William was educated at Yale, and built the Van Rensselaer manor house at Troy, New York. [Compiled from sources and references recorded on CMS]
