Born Maria Garcia Pérez de Castro was known as Sabasa Garcia to her friends. She was born in 1790 to José Joaquín Garcia Noriega and his wife Nicasia Pérez de Castro. In 1821 she was married to Juan Peñuelas [1790-1850], who owned large estates in Iruegas. During the 1840s Peñuelas was awarded the Order of Isabel la Católica and made a knight of the Order of Carlos III. Sabasa Garcia's death date is not known; the last documentary reference to her is her will of 14 May 1850. Sabasa Garcia is the subject of a portrait by Goya now in the NGA (1937.1.88).
