Catherine was born c. 1760, the daughter of Catherine Bras(s) Yates (?1736-?1797) and her husband Richard Yates, married in 1757. She and her sister, Sophia, married brothers: Catherine to George Pollock (1762-1820) and Sophia to Carlile Pollock (1749-1806). The three families had adjoining country houses on the banks of the Hudson. Richard Yates was a merchant and importer; George Pollock became his business partner. The George Pollocks had a son, Carlile Pollock (1791-1845). The Yates/Pollock families were subjects of portraits by Gilbert Stuart, now in NGA: Mrs. Richard Yates (1940.1.4), Richard Yates (1942.8.29), Catherine Yates Pollock (1942.8.19) and George Pollock (1942.8.18). Anne Elizabeth (Betsy) Pollock (b. 1758), sister to George, Hugh, and Carlile, became the second wife of Dr. William Hartigan, surgeon and professor of anatomy at Trinity College, Dublin. A portrait believed to be of Dr. Hartigan was painted by Gilbert Stuart (1942.8.16). A portrait of Mrs. Hartigan now attributed to Carl von Breda, an artist who worked for a time in Joshua Reynold's studio, is also in the NGA (1942.8.15).
