German born George Blumenthal came to the US at age 24. In 1893 he became a partner in Lazard Freres bankers, where he was made senior member until his retirement in 1935. Blumenthal was an active art collector and benefactor, most notably to the Metropolitan Museum of Art where he served on the Board of Trustees from 1909. He became president of the Metropolitan in 1934. Blumenthal's first wife was Florence Meyer [d. 1930]; in 1935 he married the former Mrs. James Blanchard Clews.
