A relative of the Theodore Frelinghuysen family, Frederick C. Hewitt was of a banking family; his father started the first bank in Tioga County, NY. Hewitt inherited a considerable fortune from his father and from his brother. At his death, Fredrick's estate was estimated at $20,000,000. Frederick was a graduate of Yale, class of 1858. He was an avid art collector, especially of the Barbizon school. Frederick died a bachelor at age 69 in Owego, New York in June 1908. His art collection was auctioned at the American Art Association in 1910.
