It's / amazing what time and a good book will / do for a reputation, particularly one / that's deserved. / Harry S Truman was smart, capable / and honest. Politics made him poorer, / not richer, and he left the world a better / place than he found it. / He is best known for the sign on his / desk that said, "The buck stops here," / but he lived by the Mark Twain quota- / tion on the wall of his Senate office: / "Always do right. This will gratify some / people and astonish the rest." / Mary Casey of Royal Oak voted for / him in 1948, when he faced Republican / Thomas Dewey and two renegade / Democrats and whipped them all.
