In his final years, Caravaggio painted The Beheading of St. John the Baptist (1608) for the altar of a Maltese church. In the 28th annual Sydney J. Freedberg Lecture on Italian Art, Keith Sciberras of the University of Malta will dive into Caravaggio’s use of complex spatial relationships and audience immersion, supported by Sciberras’s decades of site experience and archival research.

Keith Sciberras is a specialist on Caravaggio, Roman baroque sculpture, and Italian baroque painting. He is a professor of art history at the University of Malta, where he is also a member of the senate and the rector’s delegate for the university’s historical buildings. He has curated several exhibitions, including the Malta Pavilion for the Venice Biennale in 2022. His most recent publication is Art as Life: Caravaggio in Malta (2023).
