Celebrate Italian Cinema: Anna Magnani on Screen

Join us for three recently restored films that reflect the brilliance and power of Oscar-winning Italian actress Anna Magnani. Magnani embodied the essence of Italian cinema: passion, resilience and an independence especially exemplified during and after the German occupation during World War II. She collaborated with renowned filmmakers like Roberto Rossellini and Luigi Zampa, among many others, and her contribution to some of Italy’s major works of cinema is heralded this weekend.

These presentations will close the fourth Mid-Atlantic edition of the Il Cinema Ritrovato on Tour (Re-discovered Cinema on Tour), March 6-10, 2024) restored film festival, taking place across the Washington area from March 6 to 10.

The series is a collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute at the Embassy of Italy and the American Film Institute in Silver Spring, MD. Il Cinema Ritrovato on Tour is an initiative of the Italian program and the program in Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park, in partnership with the Bologna Film Archive, Italy (Cineteca di Bologna). Special thanks to Valeria Federici of UMD, and Guy Borlée, of the film festival.
