July 7–21, 2024
Three works by legendary French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard (1930-2022), programmed here in roughly 30-year increments, profile the auteur’s career-long questioning of what a film can be. These are all examples of quintessential Godard: a recent restoration of his 1963 classic Contempt, a 35mm film print of the rarely screened Nouvelle Vague from 1990, and a presentation of his final, unfinished work coupled with a very recent biographical documentary about his enduring influence. With thanks to Nicholas Elliott and Madeline Whittle for their consultation, and Kino Lorber, Rialto Pictures, and Vega Films for the loan of Godard’s work.
See our film series Never Look Away: Serge Daney’s Film Criticism, for details on the screening of Godard’s film Here and Elsewhere on July 14, 2024.
