A contemporary Orpheus and Eurydice set in Rio de Janeiro, Black Orpheus uses the riotous celebration of Carnaval and the daily reality of favelas outside the city center to tell its tragic tale, while Death stalks the streets throughout, posing as a reveler in a skeleton costume. The vibrant, heady sequences and soundtrack, with music by famous Brazilian composers Antônio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfá, are electrifying and unforgettable. (Marcel Camus, Brazil, 1958, 35mm, Portuguese with English subtitles, 105 minutes)
