Celebrate the spirit of resilience and creativity in the face of adversity, inspired by the exhibition Paris 1874: The Impressionist Moment (on view until January 19, 2025). The exhibition delves into the radical 1874 Salon in Paris that is considered the birth of modern painting—a bold act of defiance that reshaped the world of art.
This program features selections from a new opera by Gisle Kverndokk, commissioned by the New York Opera Society. Babette's Feast tells the story of a French refugee who, after fleeing the Franco-Prussian War, finds new life in Denmark against all odds. The program also journeys across the ocean to explore the music of Black American composers whose works embody the power of creativity born from struggle. This concert, one of several events by the Denyce Graves Foundation embracing the theme “Creativity in the Face of Trauma,” is a testament to the enduring force of artistic expression even in the most challenging times.
