During the fiscal year, 189 lenders from 18 countries and 24 states loaned 386 works of art to five exhibitions (three special loan exhibitions and two in-house exhibitions). The National Gallery also worked on another 23 projects scheduled to open in the next five years and administered the tour of two exhibitions.

The department of loans and the National Lending Service administered the loans of 335 works of art to 122 sites during fiscal year 2021. This year loans continued to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting museums across the United States and internationally with exhibition postponements.
