During the 16th and 17th centuries , a deep curiosity about the natural world—fueled by advancements in scientific technology, trade, and colonial expansion—led to the study of previously unknown or overlooked flora and fauna. European artists such as Joris Hoefnagel and Jan van Kessel played a pivotal role in understanding and spreading knowledge about these insects, animals, and other beestjes, or “little beasts.” Their highly detailed and playful works inspired generations of printmakers, painters, decorative artists, and naturalists. Little Beasts: Art, Wonder, and the Natural World will feature nearly 75 of these artistic achievements. Many will be paired with insect and animal specimens and taxidermy from the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History—our first collaboration of this kind. A new film by  contemporary artist Dario Robleto will build upon the exhibition themes and further examine the intersection of art, science, and the natural world.

This exhibition is organized by the National Gallery of Art with special cooperation from the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.
