Spencer, George John, 2nd earl Spencer

Biography

A Knight of the Order of the Garter, George Spencer served as 1st Lord of the Admiralty from 1794-1801, Secretary of State from 1806-7, High Steward of St. Albans (as was his father), Governor of the Charter House, and elder brother of Trinity House. He was also a Fellow of both the Royal Society and of the Society of Antiquaries. He succeeded his father as Earl in 1783. On 6 March 1781, he married Lavinia [d. 1831], eldest daughter of the 1st Earl of Lucan. They had four sons and two daughters; sons John Charles and Frederick succeeded their father as 3rd and 4th Earls, respectively.
