During the fiscal year, 238 lenders from 19 countries and 25 states loaned 1,182 works of art to 12 exhibitions (five special loan exhibitions and seven in-house exhibitions). Two exhibitions carried over from fiscal year 2021. The Gallery also worked on another 23 projects scheduled to open in the next five years and administered the tour of three exhibitions. United States Government Indemnity was secured for two exhibitions on view in fiscal year 2022, resulting in savings of more than $603,050 in insurance premiums.

National Gallery Loans to Temporary Exhibitions
The National Gallery administered the loan of 549 works of art to 158 sites during the fiscal year 2022. While the beginning of the fiscal year continued to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the increase in loan numbers from the past couple of years reflects an increase of exhibitions as more museums have reopened and resumed programming. Due to continuing travel difficulties through the middle of the year, more of the works of art lent were to exhibitions at domestic museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Turner’s Modern World; Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Rodin in the United States: Confronting the Modern; New Museum of Contemporary Art, Faith Ringgold: American People; Dallas Museum of Art, Van Gogh and the Olive Groves; and Chrysler Museum of Art, Alma W. Thomas: Everything Is Beautiful. However the National Gallery still contributed to major exhibitions throughout Europe, including Suermondt Ludwig Museum, Dürer was here. A Journey becomes Legend; Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Johannes Vermeer. On Reflection; Dordrechts Museum, In the Light of Cuyp: Aelbert Cuyp & Gainsborough–Constable–Turner; the Courtauld Gallery, Courtauld Institute of Art, Van Gogh. Self-Portraits; and the National Gallery, London, The Credit Suisse Exhibition: Raphael.
