Charles Brock, Associate Curator, Department of American and British Paintings
Charles Brock is the associate curator of American and British paintings at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, where he has worked since 1990. In addition to his expertise in American and British painting, Brock has participated in several important projects related to photography. He was a major contributor to the catalog for the landmark exhibition Modern Art and America: Alfred Stieglitz and His New York Galleries (2001) and in 2006 authored Charles Sheeler: Across Media. Among the numerous exhibition publications Brock has written for are Winslow Homer (1995), James McNeill Whistler (1995), The Victorians: British Painting, 1837–1901 (1997), Twentieth-Century American Art: The Ebsworth Collection (2000), From Bingham to Eakins: The John Wilmerding Collection (2004), and American Modernism: The Shein Collection (2010). Brock organized and edited the catalog for the critically acclaimed retrospective George Bellows (2012). He co-authored Andrew Wyeth: Looking Out, Looking In (2014) with Nancy Anderson, head of the department of American and British paintings at the National Gallery. Brock co-curated the exhibition The Woman in White: Joanna Hiffernan and James McNeill Whistler (2022), in collaboration with Margaret F. MacDonald, professor emerita of art history, University of Glasgow, and Ann Dumas, curator at the Royal Academy of Arts and consultant curator of European art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
