Stephen G. Stein has given the National Gallery of Art a superb collection of 161 photographs that includes some of the most celebrated artists in the history of photography. He has also pledged one work by Romare Bearden and another by Andrew LaMar Hopkins. Stein’s gift, which includes 66 works previously promised to the National Gallery, significantly enhances the museum’s photography holdings and is distinguished by the quality, importance, and rarity of its prints. Among the luminary photographers included in this gift are Ansel Adams, Robert Adams, Diane Arbus, Eugène Atget, Lewis Baltz, Bill Brandt, Brassaï, Harry Callahan, Chuck Close, Imogen Cunningham, William Eggleston, Walker Evans, Louis Faurer, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Gustave Le Gray, Sid Grossman, André Kertész, Leon Levinstein, Helen Levitt, Sally Mann, Charles Marville, Lisette Model, Andrew Joseph Russell, Frederick Sommer, Alec Soth, and Edward Weston.
