Biography

Artist Johann Anton Ramboux was born in Trier. He studied in Paris with Jacques-Louis David from 1809-1812 after which he began his career in Germany. Ramboux traveled extensively including several trips to Italy over the course of ten years during which he produced over 300 watercolors and over 2000 drawings copied from Italian masters. Ramboux assembled an impressive collection of some 500 paintings, mostly Italian. After his death from cholera in 1866, his collection of paintings and graphics, as well as his library, was sold at auction at Lempertz in Cologne. One of his followers, Johannes Niessen acquired a number of pictures for the Wallraf-Richardtz-Museum, but most of these were sold by the museum from the 1920s to the 1940s.
