Biography

Oeser exerted an important influence on German art. He [gave drawing lessons to] Goethe when he was in Leipzig and was a friend and patron of Winckelmann, whom he welcomed to his house in 1754/55 and introduced to Raphael Donner's ideas on the calm grandeur of Antiquity. His ideas, as transmitted by Winckelmann, were important for Mengs. Goethe's artistic appreciation and preferences are, to a considerable extent, directly due to Oeser.
