Marcotte, Joseph

Biography

Joseph Marcotte d'Argenteuil was the only son of Charles Marcotte d'Argenteuil [1773-1864], patron of Ingres, and his wife Louise-Marie Becquet de Layens [1798-1862]. Born in 1831, Joseph appears to have lead a private life, as his obituary gives neither profession or title. In 1863 he married Paule Aguillon [d. 1922] with whom he had four children, three daughters (one of whom predeceased him) and a son who survived him by only four years. Upon his father's death Joseph received a third of the family art collection, including a number of portrait drawings by Ingres. In 1849 Ingres drew Joseph at age 18 as a huntsman.
