Pedro López de Ayala [1332-1407], a celebrated general, poet, historian, and chancellor, built the tower chapel of La Virgen del Cabello at the Dominican convent of San Juan in Quejana. The convent had been founded and endowed by Ayala's father in the 1370s. In the tower, Pedro placed a sculptured tomb for himself and his wife, and donated an altarpiece dated 1396 (now at the Art Institute of Chicago). Pedro's son, Fernán Pérez de Ayala [d. 1436], an ambassador of Castille, also built a tomb for himself and his wife in the convent church and founded an altar of Saint Michael in the church.
