Sarah Ogden married Robert Gustin probably around 1798-1800. Gustin was born in New York; his father Alpheus Gustin came to Bath, Berkeley Springs, Virginia [now West Virginia] between 1778 and 1785. Both were listed as Bath storeowners in 1802. It is believed that the American naive artist Joshua Johnson painted Sarah's portrait (now in the NGA) shortly after her marriage, based on the book bearing Johnson's name that she holds in the picture (some scholars have questioned the authenticity of this inscription). The portrait was passed down through various members of Sarah's family.
