Alfred de Rothschild was a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order and a Knight of the Legion of Honour of France. Like his father, Lionel Nathan de Rothschild (1808-1879), Alfred Charles was a Baron of the Austrian Empire. From 1868-90, he acted as Director the Bank of England. He was a member of the firm of Messrs. N.M. Rothschild and Sons, and served as Deputy Lieutenant of London and as a Trustee of both the National Gallery (London) and the Wallace Collection. His illegitimate daughter by Lady Marie Wombwell (Almina Victoria Marie Alexandra Wombwell) married George Edward Stanhope Molyneux Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon.
