The son of James Pender, Esq. and his wife Marion Mason Pender, Sir John was created a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1892. He served as President of three telegraph companies: The Globe, the Eastern, and the Eastern Extension, and was actively involved in the development of Submarine telegraphy. His various civic and governmental positions included: Deputy Lieutenant for county Lancaster, Justice of the Peace for counties Kent and Middlesex, Member of Parliament for Totnes (1865-66) and for Wick Burghs (1892-at least 1894). In 1851 Sir John married Emma [d. 1890], daughter of Henry Denison, Esq., of Daybrook, Nottinghamshire. [Compiled from sources and references recorded on CMS]
