A Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant, Taylor also served as High Sheriff of county Warwick in 1786. He married Sarah, eldest daughter of Samuel Skey of Spring Grove, county Worcester, on 20 June 1778. Shortly thereafter, Taylor commissioned a portrait of his wife (now in the NGA) to be painted by Thomas Gainsborough. The couple had two sons, named John and James.
