James Maxtone succeeded his uncle, Robert Graham (2nd Baron Lynedoch), in the estate of Redgorton in 1859. A Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace, he obtained a patent to bear the name and quarter arms of Graham of Balgowan, as an heir of line of that family (his mother was a Graham). He married Caroline Mary Anne Russell on 30 July 1851. They had five daughters and three sons, the eldest of whom, Anthony George Maxtone Graham, succeeded James as 14th of Cultoquhey.
