Clarence Van Dyck Tiers was a descendant of the artist Matthew Pratt. Clarence's mother was Anna Van Dyck (1846-1922). His father, LaRue Tiers, was the son of Anna Matilda (1809-1854) one of three daughters of Pratt's daughter Mary (1771-1849) who married William Fennell. Anna Matilda (1809-1854) married Arundius Tiers II (b. 1795) in 1828 and had at least two children, LaRue and Rosalie Valence. Rosalie married Charles P. Jackson. She inherited from her aunt, Maria Fennell (c. 1800-1880), at least two of Pratt's paintings now in the NGA (1942.16.2 and 1944.17.1). Rosalie gave the paintings to her nephew Clarence, who donated them to the National Gallery of Art. [Compiled from sources and references recorded on CMS]
