William Frederick Havemeyer was the son of William F. Havemeyer (1802-1874) and his wife Sarah Agnes Craig. The elder Havemeyer was a successful sugar refiner, banker, and mayor of New York (1845-1846 and 1849-1850). The younger Havemeyer also had a career in banking, serving as president of the National Bank of North America and the Queens County Safe Deposit Company. He was also a director of the New York Mortgage and Security Company. On 3 April 1877 William Frederick Havemeyer married Josephine Harmon. He was the founder of the Havemeyer Laboratory at NYU.
