Editor, art historian, and picture dealer Maurice Joyant became director of the Galerie Boussod et Valadon in 1890, following the death of Theo van Gogh. There he became acquainted with Michel Manzi [1849-1915], hired in 1881 as the director of the gallery's printing and engraving studio. Joyant played an important role in the purchase of Whistler's portrait of his mother by the French state, and was a great friend of Toulouse-Lautrec. With Manzi, Joyant became increasingly involved with the publishing operations of Boussod et Valadon; in 1893 the publishing house went by the name of Boussod-Valadon, Manzi et Joyant and in 1897 became Manzi et Joyant.Boussod et Valadon ceased operations in 1919, and its collections were dispersed at auction at Georges Petit. After the death of Jean Boussod, Manzi and Joyant established their own gallery on the rue de la Ville-l'Eveque.
