Brothers Elkan and Abraham Silberman were established in Vienna as art and antiques dealers. They fled Austria in 1938 and came to the United States, where they already had a gallery on East 57th Street in New York. Portions of their personal possessions and gallery stock were confiscated and dispersed at auction in Vienna in 1938 and 1940.
