Virginia Murray Bacon was the daughter of Fannie Morris Babcock Murray [1858-1940] and Henry Alexander Murray. She was a descendant of Henry Babcock, brother of Adam Babcock, sitter for a portrait by John Singleton Copley now in the NGA (1978.79.1). Mrs. Bacon bequeathed a portrait of Mrs. Adam Babcock, also by Copley (1985.21.1) to the National Gallery. Her husband, Robert Low Bacon, whom she married in 1913, was a congressman representing New York from 1922 until his death in 1938. Mrs. Bacon was known in Washington as a patron and connoisseur of music and the arts, and as a grand hostess. The Bacons had three children: Alexandra, Virginia, and Martha.
