Biography

Adele was the daughter of Cornelia Adelaide Granger (1819-1892) and her first husband John Eliot Thayer. John Eliot Thayer was one of the early members of the banking house of Kidder, Peabody and Company. Cornelia Granger married secondly, in 1865, to Robert Charles Winthrop (1809-1894) of Boston. Winthrop, a descendant of Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts, graduated from Harvard and studied law with Daniel Webster. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, serving as its Speaker form 1847-1849, and later a U.S. Senator, filling out the unexpired term of Webster. Miss Thayer was an active philanthropist and member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brookline. For many years she maintained a summer estate, "Uplands," in Manchester, Massachusetts. Adele Thayer died 20 March 1918.
