Laurier was a wealthy lawyer and man of politics. A member of the Paris bar, Laurier was secretary to lawyer and statesman Adolphe Crémieux. After the revolution of 1870 he held the post of under-secretary for the Interior in the Government of National Defense. Laurier entertained poets and artists, including Gustave Courbet, at his country estate, the home of his in-laws, the château de l'Epineau near Le Blanc in the Department de l'Indre.
