Clarissa was the daughter of Catherine Boyer Coolidge Pomeroy [1808-1861] and her husband Samuel Wyllys Pomeroy. She was a descendant of Joseph Coolidge [1747-1820], a Boston merchant and importer who was twice painted by Gilbert Stuart. One of these portraits is now in the National Gallery of Art (1940.1.3).
