Conversations with Artists
In this virtual presentation inspired by the exhibition Sargent and Spain, artists Simon Edmondson and Eva Salmerón will present on their creative practice, commonalities with Sargent, and the shared inspiration of Spanish culture. Sarah Cash, exhibition co-curator and associate curator of American and British paintings at the National Gallery of Art, will give an introduction and moderate questions.
About Sargent and Spain, Simon Edmondson, and Eva Salmerón
The Sargent and Spain exhibition explores John Singer Sargent’s personal captivation with Spain, which resulted in a remarkable body of work that documents his extensive travels from the north to the south and to the island of Majorca. Over three decades Sargent responded to the country’s rich culture by producing landscapes and marine scenes, pictures of everyday life, and architectural studies, as well as sympathetic portrayals of the locals he encountered.

Simon Edmondson
Simon Edmondson is an artist who, like Sargent, is influenced by the rich cultural history of Spain and has studied the work of Spanish master Diego Velázquez. Living in Madrid since 1991, Edmondson will speak to Sargent’s fascination with and emulation of Velázquez’s technique.

Eva Salmerón is head of the Madrid-based artist collective mmmm…, which designs public art installations. In Spain, the street is place of gathering and celebration. Connecting with Sargent’s masterful ability to capture the local spirit, Salmerón will describe the power of the Spanish street and customs to spark creative expression.
