The vibrancy of the impressionist moment echoed in the dazzling hues of early cinema, well before Technicolor was invented. These shimmering cinematic examples of hand-coloring, tinting and toning, and stencil coloring are drawn from the collection of the EYE Filmmuseum in Amsterdam. They include include early trick films and travelogues featuring images of Dutch windmills silhouetted against fiery sunsets, dancers from Paris and Algeria, the iridescent fountains of Versailles, and the alpine auras of Chamonix. This program draws from films featured in the book Fantasia of Color in Early Cinema (2015), a collective work that provides fresh reconsideration of the pioneering uses of color in film, with a forward by Martin Scorsese and contributions by Giovanna Fossati, Tom Gunning, Elif Rongen-Kaynakçi, Jonathon Rosen, and Joshua Yumibe. All films restored by EYE Filmmuseum.
