Join us for a post-screening discussion with media artist Maryam Tafakory, in person.
Celebrated artist Maryam Tafakory works with images, words, and feelings to create textual and filmic collages that stitch together poetry, documentary, performance, and archival and found material. She is interested in depictions of erasure, secrecy, and the violence of invisible regulatory bodies. Her award-winning research-based projects look at what is often neglected and discarded as trivial, excessive, or unscientific. Hers is an ongoing body of video essays in dialogue with post-revolution Iranian cinema. Included in this program are Nazarbazi (2022, 20 minutes) and Mast-del (2023, 17 minutes), two recent videos that examine depictions of intimacy within Iranian cinema, that since the 1979 revolution has rarely shown love interests or romantic characters physically touching. With special thanks to Sophie Cavoulacos, department of film, MoMA for collaborating on making this special artist presentation possible.
