The complexity of Nigerian musician Fela Kuti’s life is related through the perspective and conversations of Afro-Cuban writer Carlos Moore, Fela’s close friend and official biographer. My Friend Fela reveals the many influences and forces that shaped the artist’s extraordinary life: his relationship with his mother; his many problematic relationships with other women; his ties with his spiritual adviser, Professor Hindu; and his mutually influential encounters with African Americans. Placing Fela’s personal history in a Pan-African context, the film becomes not only a portrait of one man but also of a Pan-African generation. (Joel Zito Araújo, Brazil, 2019, Portuguese with English subtitles, DCP, 94 minutes)
