This tour explores how German expressionists sought to interpret dramatic changes in the tumultuous early 20th-century world marked by world war and revolution. We’ll look closely at works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emil Nolde, Otto Dix, Käthe Kollwitz, and Egon Schiele. Then, we’ll discuss the legacy of German expressionism on post-1950 contemporary artists who invite us to compare the social, political, and cultural transformations taking place in our own societies today. Led by staff from the Department of Interpretation.
